Central Mine Planning & Design Institute

Central Mine Planning & Design Institute Limited (CMPDI) was separately incorporated as a strategic unit of the then Coal Mines Authority Limited (CMAL) in 1974, subsequent to the nationalization of India's coal industry. It became a wholly owned subsidiary of Coal India Limited (CIL), the largest coal-producing company in the world, after CMAL was merged with CIL in 1975. Based in Ranchi, CMPDI is a Schedule-B Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) and has been accorded Mini Ratna (Category I) status since June 2019. It is ISO 9001, ISO 27001, and ISO 37001 certified, which basically reflects its commitment to quality, information security, and anti-bribery practices. CMPDI has been providing end-to-end consultancy and support services on mineral exploration, mine planning, infrastructure design, environmental management, and system implementation. While the core sectors remain coal and minerals, its technical capabilities are increasingly sought after by allied industries both within and outside the country. This company also performs a key policy and coordination function on behalf of the Ministry of Coal as a nodal agency for R&D and strategic initiatives. With seven regional institutes across India and a network of exploration camps and field units, CMPDI is positioned both as a commercial and a national strategic asset in India's energy and resource planning ecosystem.
